How to choose a turntable that will outlast you

1–2 minutes
The platter of a turntable, close up

A good turntable can play records for forty years. The trick is to pay for the parts that matter and none of the parts that do not.

Belt or direct drive

Belt drive keeps the motor's vibration away from the platter, which is why most hi-fi turntables use it. Direct drive starts faster and holds speed with no belt to replace, which is why DJs love it.

The cartridge comes first

Most of what you hear comes from the cartridge and how well it is aligned. Ask for it to be fitted and set up before the turntable leaves the shop, and bring it back after the first hundred hours.
